Free things to do in New York City
New York has a reputation for being expensive — but some of its very best experiences cost nothing. Here's an honest, current list of what's genuinely free, from the famous to the local.

1. The Staten Island Ferry
Runs 24/7, totally free, and glides right past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Sit on the right side heading to Staten Island for the best view.
2. The High Line
An elevated park built on an old freight rail line, running through Chelsea with gardens, art and skyline views. Free and open daily.
3. Central Park
843 acres of the city's best free space — Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, Strawberry Fields and skyline lawns.
4. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge
One of the world's great free walks, with the whole Manhattan skyline behind you as you cross into Brooklyn.
5. The New York Public Library
Step into the Rose Main Reading Room and see the marble lions out front — one of the most beautiful public buildings in America.
6. Grand Central Terminal
Look up at the constellation ceiling and try the whispering gallery. A working station and a free landmark.
7. Little Island
A free park on stilts over the Hudson at Pier 55, with an amphitheatre and river views.
8. Chelsea art galleries
Dozens of world-class contemporary galleries around West 20s–20th streets, free to walk into — especially lively on Thursday evenings.
9. The Oculus & 9/11 Memorial
Calatrava's soaring white transit hall and the moving twin reflecting pools are both free to visit.
10. Free museum hours
Several major museums have free or pay-what-you-wish windows — for example MoMA's free Friday evenings. Always check current hours before you go.
11. The National Museum of the American Indian
A Smithsonian museum in a grand Beaux-Arts building near Battery Park — free every day.
12. Brooklyn Heights Promenade
A short elevated walkway with a postcard view straight across the river to Lower Manhattan.
